Latest Videos - 2020
2020 was a good year for writing songs, making videos and spending time in the studio. Here are some of the projects that kept me sane this year.
"Planet Home" is a song I wrote with the kids of Lansvale Public School Class 3S, in my role as a teaching artist with the Sydney Opera House's Creative Leadership in Learning Program. Covid restrictions forced us to be creative in how we performed this song. That creative adaptation led to us learning a new language together, which led to us collaborating with one of Australia's most famous and beloved entertainers. I'm very grateful to have gone on this journey with these kids and their teacher, and very proud of the end result.
I started this year with plans to write an autobiography. Some time in the misty weeks of February and March those plans started turning into songs. I first performed them at a surprise 70th birthday concert for my Mum at a recording studio on the Central Coast, backed by an incredible band who are usually out touring with the likes of Neil Finn, Paul Kelly, Tim Minchin and Missy Higgins. There was something dreamlike about this concert, which I think is captured in these two videos.
You'll be able to hear the studio versions of these songs on a new Luke Escombe album next year. I'm really excited about how it's all coming together.
The Vegetable Plot in 2020
The Vegetable Plot went to ground in 2020, with all our tour plans being cancelled early in the year. However, the release of Season Two through ABC Music late last year planted the seed for some of my biggest 2020 highlights: an ARIA nomination for "Best Children's Album" and a winning song in the children's category of the International Songwriting Competition for Waiting for a Bus.
